So I'm pretty sure Hubs brought home some sort of ick. Since he works in a secure government building, it's basically like working inside of an airplane. He's pretty much breathing in everyone else's nastiness and then since he loves us so much, he brings it home. Sharing is caring, right?
Yesterday morning I thought Nugget sounded a little congested and by the end of the day, I was just starting to feel some scratchiness in my throat. Not that anyone ever wants to be sick, but seriously, I really don't want to be sick. I have to run 8 miles on Sunday and nothing sounds worse than running (or, let's be real, jogging) 8 miles while sick. Not to mention a sick baby = waking up a lot and crappy sleep. Seriously...
I decided I was going to get rid of this thing fast. I've heard great things about elderberry syrup, but I've never tried it before. I know that you can make your own, but I needed it stat and Publix doesn't have elderberries (will be making some soon to have it ready for next time because it's not cheap to buy in the stores!). Thankfully, CVS had elderberry syrup and I made sure everyone took a shot of it. Hubs was skeptical of course and all I could think of was how delicious it would taste on pancakes (side note - read that it's good on pancakes. Thanks, Google). This stuff is awesome! I woke up and could hardly feel any scratchiness in my throat. Hubs even said he felt much better than expected and that, GASP, he actually thought it worked (this coming from the man that won't even go the chiropractor). Nugget still didn't seem quite as healed since he only had the one dose before bedtime, but after 2 doses so far today, he seems to be less congested and is acting like himself.
I also made myself some apple cider vinegar tea with local honey. Hubs refuses to try it and I'm not going to give it to Nugget since I'm pretty sure he'd hate it, so I'm alone on this remedy. I always feel better when I drink ACV tea. I've used it as a gargle many times when I've had a sore throat and it helps a lot. Not to mention it's an appetite suppressant, so it's a win-win for me.
Since Nugget was still congested this morning, I decided to make a homemade chest rub. No petroleum products for me, thank you very much Vick's. I've made this for him before using 2 tbsp. of coconut oil and a few drops of eucalyptus oil, but to be honest, it's SO greasy. I read somewhere about using beeswax (mind your own) to make a salve instead so it's not so oily. I didn't have any beeswax, but I did have some Burt's Bees beeswax hand salve. I decided to add the eucalyptus oil to that. I heated it, added the oil, and poured it back into it's tin. Nugget started to clear up quickly after using it. I also added eucalyptus oil to his humidifier for extra effect during nap time. He's also been taking the Hyland's Tiny Cold Tablets because I love them and they work so well with him!
Next time you or someone in your family is sick with a cold, give one of these remedies a try. Heck, even if you have the flu, I'd give the elderberry syrup a try. It is supposed to be nature's Tamiflu. Stay healthy, everyone!
